ANALYSIS AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE FLOW DISTRIBUTION BY USING COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS SIMULATIONS

Besides minimizing the overall pressure drop, which leads to higher roundtrip efficiency due to reduced power consumption of the pumps, it is also important to optimize the flow distribution within the stack. Having a homogenous flow of electrolyte through the electrodes ensures an optimal utilization of the active material and equal voltage distribution. This leads to high efficiency and longevity of the battery.

With the 3D model of our frame and the permeability constant of the felt, gained from our own measurements, we are able to build a precise model of a half-cell of the battery in respect of the electrolyte flow. Our partners at UPJS in Kosice are carrying out CFD-simulations based on this model, showing the flow distribution inside the electrode. Regions of low flow, with the consequence of electrolyte depletion, can be detected. After analyzing the critical locations, changes in the frame design can be implemented leading to an improved flow distribution.
