In October 2024, Elena Romadina, the Senior Chemical Engineer at Inohub Energy, participated in the 8th International Conference on Novel Materials: Fundamentals and Applications, which was held at Štrbské Pleso in the High Tatras.
During the conference, Elena delivered a presentation on the laboratory testing of redox flow batteries. The necessary nesting equipment was discussed, which includes a potentiostat, pumps, tubing, and a thermal box.
Additionally, the construction of the laboratory cell and the essential materials needed for optimal cell functioning were described. These materials include:
- Sealings that are stabilized in contact with vanadium electrolyte
- Electrode material (carbon felt) that must be properly activated to ensure better wettability and fast electrochemical kinetics
- An ion-conductive membrane that provides effective separation of ions from both sides of the battery, is characterized by low resistance and remains stable against vanadium electrolyte
Another critical component is the vanadium electrolyte. The oxidation state of the vanadium in long-term experiments can be monitored using titration or UV-Vis measurements.
The experimental data mentioned in the presentation were obtained in collaboration with the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice and the Technical University in Košice.
